Q. What are the benefits of chanting the Holy names of Krishna?
- Prachi
A. The main benefit of chanting is that one gradually develops pure love of God, the ultimate goal of life.
In a poetic stanza of seven metaphors, Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself tells us the benefits we can enjoy by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra.
The first metaphor is cheto-darpana-marjanam: “The chanting of the holy name of God polishes the mirror of the mind.”
The second of Lord Caitanya’s metaphors is bhava-mahadavagni-nirvapanam: “The chanting of God’s holy names extinguishes the blazing fire of material existence.”
The third, shreyau-kairava-chandrika-vitaranam: “The chanting of Hare Krishna is the waxing moon that causes the white lotus of universal good fortune to blossom.”
Next Lord Caitanya says, vidya-vadhu-jivanam: “The chanting of God’s holy names is the life and soul of all transcendental knowledge.”
anandambudhi-vardhanam, is the fifth: “The chanting of Hare Krishna expands the ocean of transcendental bliss.”
In the sixth Lord Caitanya says pratipada purnamritasvadanam: “Chanting Hare Krishna enables one to taste full nectar at every step.”
Finally, Lord Caitanya describes the chanting of the holy name as sarvatma-snapanam: “It gives a cooling effect to everyone.”
Like material pleasures, material pains become insignificant for one who bathes his consciousness in the cooling river of sound called hari-nama-sankirtana, the congregational chanting of Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna. Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.
